Secretariat holds the Kentucky Derby record at 1:59.40, set in 1973 over 1¼ miles—10 furlongs—at Churchill Downs. Monarchos recorded the second-fastest winning time, 1:59.97 in 2001, a gap of 0.57 seconds between the published times. Through the 2026 running, they remain the only Derby winners to break two minutes. Source: Kentucky Derby official time records.

The important distinction is between a race’s recorded final time, an individual runner’s time and the official winner. Those are not always interchangeable.

The 10 fastest recorded Derby race times

This table ranks Derby runnings by their recorded final time, not every horse’s individual performance. It follows the official Derby time table, which retains Medina Spirit’s 2021 time while marking him as disqualified.

Rank Year First past the post Recorded final time Gap from published record
1 1973 Secretariat 1:59.40 —
2 2001 Monarchos 1:59.97 0.57 sec
3 1964 Northern Dancer 2:00.00 0.60 sec
4 1985 Spend a Buck 2:00.20 0.80 sec
5 1962 Decidedly 2:00.40 1.00 sec
6 1967 Proud Clarion 2:00.60 1.20 sec
7 2020 Authentic 2:00.61 1.21 sec
8 2021 Medina Spirit — disqualified 2:01.02 1.62 sec
9 1996 Grindstone 2:01.06 1.66 sec
10 2000 Fusaichi Pegasus 2:01.12 1.72 sec

Medina Spirit is not an official Derby winner. He crossed the line first in 2021 but was subsequently disqualified to last. The official Derby stakes history lists Mandaloun as the winner and explains the disqualification. Keeping 2:01.02 in a race-time ranking does not restore Medina Spirit’s victory or make it Mandaloun’s individual elapsed time.

For the official winners rather than a time ranking, see Kentucky Derby winners by year.

Where does Sham fit?

Sham finished second to Secretariat in 1973, beaten 2½ lengths. America’s Best Racing quotes his time as 1:59⅘, or approximately 1:59.8—faster than Monarchos’s winning time.

However, Sham’s exact individual time was not officially recorded; retrospective estimates vary. It should not be presented as an independently measured hundredth-of-a-second result. Source: Sham’s timing history.

That explains why “second-fastest horse” and “second-fastest winning time” can produce different answers. Sham belongs in the discussion of individual performances; Monarchos remains second in the official race-time table.

How to interpret the number on a racecard

Read the distance first. The Derby was run over 1½ miles from 1875–1895 and changed to 1¼ miles in 1896. The longer-distance editions are not like-for-like entries in this ranking. Source: official Derby distance history.

Do not mistake formatting for precision. The official stakes history prints Secretariat’s time as 1:59⅖, equivalent to the 1:59.40 used in the time table. Adding a trailing zero does not give a result reported in fifths hundredth-of-a-second precision. Proud Clarion’s time is likewise reported as 2:00⅗ in the stakes history. Consequently, his published 2:00.60 and Authentic’s 2:00.61 should not be treated as proof of a precisely measured 0.01-second difference in ability. Source: official Derby stakes history.

Separate raw time from a speed figure. Raw time records duration; it does not adjust for the day’s track conditions. Equibase explains that its Speed Figure combines a horse’s actual time with track condition. A fast clocking is historical evidence, not by itself a forecast of the next performance.
